To start off, directions for which side of the bike is which are given from when you are sitting
on the seat. (Most people get this confused to begin with.)
Engine oil capacities: without filter: 1.9 US quarts; with filter: 2.5 US quarts. This is per the
'98 Savage owner's manual.
Too much oil can blow out the engine seals and gaskets. How much is "too much"? Bruce and Frank say
they run a bit more than recommended without trouble but I can't remember how much more.
Mine is about 1/16" higher than the top line in the oil sight glass (which must be read with the bike
upright and level).
As for the grade of oil, go by your temperature where you live as 10W40 may be a little thin if it's
consistently warm. 10W40 should be fine for most conditions anyway; I run 30W when it's really hot out.
